People are saying…

An inspiring story of building an empire with your own rules.
   – Denver Examiner
Completely even-handed, the film is… something that really needs to seen to be believed.
        – Highsnobiety.com
The film left a mark on me like a tattoo.
        – TJ Brearton, Lake Placid Film Festival Programmer
Skatopia gives visitors… a taste of the absolute freedom they think they want.
        – Rolling Stone
It’s what you learn how to skate for… its living.
                – Dustin Dollin, Pro-skateboarder
The Story
A feature documentary that goes inside one of skateboarding’s most mythic places…Skatopia… a rural Appalachian skate scene so extreme that MTV’s bad-boy Bam Margera fled the property on his first visit.  A volunteer army of skaters and hillbillies have built this “sovereign nation” where they live free from society’s rules.
The movie follows Skatopia’s owner and self-declared dictator of anarchy, Brewce Martin, through an obstacle strewn year as his radical twist on the American dream is challenged by bill collectors, a rag-tag labor force and a stint in the regional jail.
A fun, frightening and inspiring look at one man’s fierce pursuit of his dreams.

Interview: Marty Murawski

Marty Murawski at the Cowtown Showdown

Marty Murawski seems to be described in the same way by everyone who has ever met him: laidback and funny. I got to meet Marty during the weekend of the Cowtown Showdown and (thanks to Tedd Cookerly) I got the chance interview him. After doing so, I can agree with the aforementioned description. The whole weekend Marty had a smile on his face and could be found making jokes and skating around with the kids. I can’t forget to mention that his laidback style melts over into his skating, which makes for some pretty fluid manual tricks. Now, I’ll spare you the ongoing description and let Marty do the talking for himself…

Click more for the interview.

Fantasy Factory Trailer

This trailer shows the horse racing I poorly alluded to in the post where I spoke with Rob’s dad. His dad said he once asked Rob how long he thought he could keep doing it and Rob said forever, I really believe he could; horse racing, swimming with lions, that mini rally car, that’s not on the average to do list or programming schedule. Keep up the good work Rob.

For more on Rob and co. check this post: Local Festivities
